Bubs Gave me a Smile Today and boy, I needed it
Mom is heading into surgery now. This will give her some relief for sure. Yesterday I spent the majority of the day reading with my little sister by Mom’s bedside. I finished On the Road (amazing, I knew it was an important book in our culture and more specifically the Beat Generation culture, but I had no idea how great the prose was) and I also read from cover to cover in one sitting, The Last Lecture. The Last Lecture got me. Wow it hit home. A good friend that I work with, Rhonda gave me this after my father passed away. As soon as I finished the book, I dried my eyes and handed it to my sister to read.
I did head home to take care of a few things around my house and while hosing the yellow pollen off my front porch, I spotted something that made me double over in laughter. My son during his last visit had positioned some army guys in his window sill in somewhat defensive positions. Makes you wonder if he left them there to protect his Daddy. Well, thanks Bubs, they’ve kept me safe…
And another side effect of Mom being in the hospital has been Pearson, her cocker spaniel staying with me. He’s an OK dog, but his interaction with Mr. E has been hilarious. Mr. E, as you may know is a big kitty (22 pounds) and he doesn’t take shit from any dog. He also doesn’t like it when Pearson tries to get in my his bed. When Pearson tries to hop up in the bed, Mr. E gives him a swat and he slinks back down, grumbling down on the floor. To further emasculate Pearson, Mr. E has also started bullying Pearson away from his own food bowl, evidenced below…

I’ll be thinking good thoughts for your mom!
My kids and I did some of the cubecrafts and they thought it was cool even though it was mostly me doing it all.

Kids just seem to… KNOW … when we need them. Awesome!
I hope your mom is doing well hon. She’s in my thoughts as are you.
(Can I just say… Mr E? MADE OF AWESOME! lol)

The Last Lecture is on my list to read over the summer, I’ve heard wonderful things about it. Prayers are going out for you mom today, and for you and your sister. Love the army men…Van knew that you would find it just when you needed it. Kids know so much!

Mr. E– a cat who knows his boundaries, and knows when their defense requires ass kicking… I have to admire that.
Sending good thoughts for your mom and all you guys.

i am so late getting here so i only just saw all of this. i am so sorry to hear about your mom. that’s just awful! praying the surgery goes well and mom’s recovery is quick. also, as one who needed surgical repair of a sever bone break let me say…if she is not getting good post surgical pain relief from whatever painkillers they give her advocate for her. don’t be afraid to ask them to change her medicines until they find what works. i spent 48 hours in agony because what they gave me didn’t work but i was too out of it to really be able to fight for myself. ditto for my MIL when she had a similar injury a few months ago. my prayers are with your mom and you.

You have such an army of supporters – maybe the little men were just a reminder. I’m glad you had a smile. The last lecture is super awesome – and I’m also glad you enjoyed it.
(((hug)))
I hate it when I’m not in control and people remind me of that…. so I won’t do the same.

Hope everything is OK, Van.

Oh, I do wish your mom a speedy recovery. My MIL did this two years ago…
Love the soldiers on the windowsill!
Love Mr. E too; but poor Pearson; hope he isn’t missing his mistress too much.

See, I spent my day drying to figure out if the wrinkles on my knuckles look more like Buddy Hackett, or a cooter. You so win.

I read On the Road a long time ago, as well as a biography of Kerouac written by one of his girlfriends.
I haven’t read the The Last Lecture. You can watch it on YouTube.
When do the kiddos arrive?
Hope Mom’s surgery went well….

Sorry about your mom. I hope she does well with the surgery.
I have a cat that looks just like Bubs and he’s a take-no-shit cat too. He’s huuuuge and convinced he runs everything. That poor dog doesn’t stand a chance.
May 18th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Ooops, misread. The cat is Mr. E, not Bubs.
May 18th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Kids, they just know. They’re with you, always.
Thinking good thoughts for you.

Mwahahahaha. Mr. E. is MY kinda cat. My Raven (aka fattie) eats dog food too. Except he straddles the WHOLE bowl.
May 19th, 2008 at 8:36 am
So sorry to hear about your mom. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Mr. E is wicked cool! I think he might be able to take my great dane…ask him if he wants to arrange the match!

Cats and dogs being equal, they aren’t. I’ll take the cat and 2.5 over an equal-sized dog any day. Then again, our 7.5-lb cat takes on our 80-lb. golden all the time (and usually wins).
RE: Army Men – have to love that Bubs left behind a rear guard for you. I have a good army man story you may like, too. Some friends of mine – for whatever reason – started a prank where they would leave an army man or two behind when they came to visit. For days afterward, you knew that they were around and that it was just a matter of finding them (sometimes you found them the hard way, like while pre-heating the oven). The coup de grace was when my buddy Jim got married and left for his honeymoon. They returned to find HUNDREDS of army men hidden strategically all over the house. They even found a few more when they moved out years later (you’d be surprised how far they can hide into the deepest corners of a sofa – kinda like the Japanese in the jungles of the Pacific islands). I think you should start that tradition with Bubs, personally…
RE: Your mom Best wishes for a successful operation and a quick recovery.

I totally agree and couldnt put it any better than anyone else has — kids just know.
As for your big boned kitty, that is good stuff. Perhaps Mr. E and Bubs have tactical meetings to decide who shall protect the bed, food and outer perimeter? I dunno, just sayin…
I hope your mom is better soon!
Sorry about the Flyers… guess Bettman got his wish for the Eastern Conf champ, eh? I’m hoping the Stars can spoil his plan for the West. We need a major miracle but we shall see I guess.

Your words always do well, but the photos make it pop for me. Love the army guys.
Best to yer ma!
