Think of him as a non-thinking man’s Nixon.

Whew! I am needless to say, very pleased with the presidential election results. I’m waiting for the sore loser bumper stickers to start showing up on the H2s and other rigoddamndiculously big SUVs like they did after Clinton ran Bush I out of office. All the “Don’t Blame me I Voted for Bush!” bumper stickers… Whenever I saw these tools, I was always struck with the thought (besides running them off the road, probably scalding themselves with their big cup of $9 coffee in the mug lined with extinct animal hide) “blame you for what? this great economy? the respect of other nations that we are enjoying? this peace?”

But in all seriousness, this is only the beginning of reclaiming this country towards the focus of correcting this economy and our worldly stature. There is a lot of shit to fix folks, and just getting our guy in office is hardly the end game.

W, I think will go down in a similar vein as Nixon. I think there is the potential for some of the administrations’ work to reveal itself as being a good movement here and there, but W was just too despised to ever be seen as anything but the marble mouthed bully as he was depicted (and was in some senses… OK, a lot of senses). Nixon did open Communist China to the west, but most everyone equates him with the Watergate scandal. The scandal was inexcusable, granted, but to be Machiavellian, his administration was a part of our history that many positive things were derived. I think there’s a chance for W’s legacy to garner the same intelligent appreciation given some ugly parts as well. Think of him as a non-thinking man’s Nixon.

Besides, Joe Biden has a LOT of comedic potential. Kind of like when I get that MP3 you are making for me of “Eye of the Tiger” in hand farts.

    Mr. Furious..
liberalism scares the bajeebers out of me!

I don’t like big government … I don’t like expanding entitlement programs… I believe in donating to charites rather than having our wasteful goverment taking our hard earned tax dollars..

our governments MAIN priority is to protect us from foreign and domestic terrorists….

    not to give handouts.

Here, I found this for you…

we can expect a lot of this kind of thinking :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6ikOxi9yYk

I do not believe in redistribution of wealth…

I am allll for helping those that can’t help themselves… but not to pay for generations of people living off the government… and you know that is happening… right? All races, BTW.

  19.  furiousBall Says:

Terri – the government’s main priority is to serve the will of the people of our country. donating to charities is wonderful and i’ve never seen political implications whether private citizens donate or not. i don’t agree with expanding entitlement programs like yourself, but when we spend more money on invading countries that have no terrorist ties than we do on our own schools… that’s not conservative (at least I hope that isn’t for your sake) or liberal values, that’s stupid and that’s why change happened.

  20.  furiousBall Says:

Terri – what was the point in posting that video clip with that insinuation? I don’t know what Peggy was thinking, but she’s cut off in the clip itself and if that’s what she thinks is going to happen, well she’s wrong. Do you really think that a bill to give free mortgage and gas money is coming now? Really?

  21.  Terri@SteelMagnolia Says:

It was FDR and Woodrow Wilson that started the entitlement programs…..

and we donate to a variety of charities….. the ones of our choosing….

Of course Peggy is misinformed… but obviously THAT is the message she got from Obama, and most likely lots of others.

    Terri@SteelMagnolia´s last blog post..

  22.  furiousBall Says:

Terri – Wilson was elected president in 1912, and FDR left office in 1945. so…. what happened the past 60 years? there have been conservative and liberal elected officials in the presidency since then. FDR’s policies rescued the nation from the great depression.

that is great you donate to charities, i meant no insult by my comment. but really, that is neither a republican nor democratic choice. those that donate are good folk in my book.

I can’t speak for Peggy and where she got that message and honestly do not understand how you can gleam that from that short clip. For every Peggy you show me, I can show you some very sick rascist examples of conservatives shouting terrorist at Obama. we can throw fringe examples from both sides at each other all day long. Don’t use an example like this when the conservative house is definitely not in order as well

  23.  SQT Says:

I’m with Houston. Success for Obama is success for all of us– no matter what your politics.

  25.  Franki Says:

I can’t help but crack up when people scream about fear of big government when ol’ Bush/Cheney have given us the Patriot Act and the Total Information Awareness Program. Is this considered small government?

    Seriously?

Franki´s last blog post..When Nature Invades.

  26.  Peter Says:

@ Franki: exactly. The right wing Rep under Bush are the quintessential example of “big, totally invasive government”.

Some of the Rep posters here seem to have no clue how much both the Patriot Act and the Total Information Awareness Program were a part of “big government, less freedom’, a government that even largely privatized the unwarranted invasion of Irak.

@ Terri@SteelMagnolia: giving to charities is fine, but it should never replace “compassionate government”: any true democracy should care for those who cannot care for themselves.

If you want to see *real “big government”: come over to Belgium, where I’m living:
0% to 50% tax on income: you’d leave screaming :P

    On the other hand:
when I was hit with severe medical problems I got top quality care, fully paid for by Belgian taxes.

And when I had to quit my job due to those medical issues, I didn’t lose my home:
    nothing really changed income wise.

That bizarre Bush era legacy of “be scared” seems to live on:
“our governments MAIN priority is to protect us from foreign and domestic terrorists”
is exactly what the Bush admin made you believe,
until you finally noticed they were bankrupting the USA.

  29.  Terri@SteelMagnolia Says:

Peter, thanks for the note!! …. but, truly, it wasn’t Bush that has convinced me that our government is here to protect us … it’s on our Constitution … I got this online for you, read the second paragraph:

The Preamble to the Constitution has no force in law; instead, it establishes the “Why” of the Constitution. Why is this document in existence? It reflects the desires of the Framers to improve on the government they currently had (to be “more perfect” than the Articles of Confederation),

to ensure that that government would be just, and would protect its citizens from internal strife and from attack from the outside. It would be of benefit to the people, rather than to its detriment. And, perhaps as importantly, it intended to do the same for the future generations of Americans.

I’m really not a mean spirited person and I of course would want to help those that can’t help themselves… of course … and trust me … we’ve had our fair share of medical issues w/ our medically fragile baby .. running out of insurance w/ no hopes of purchasing private insurance … and there was nothing for us … because we were middle class and not at or below the poverty level …

we were being steered to poverty and told to divorce so I could be a poor single mom or give our baby up for adoption, in order to get Medicaid. We were told this by conselors and people in our state government….

So… I get excited about this kind of stuff…

I will probably not post anything politial again… I seem to get myself into trouble.

i think Peggy’s not misinformed, i think she’s misunderstood. what i get from that clip is that all Peggy’s saying is with the new man in charge the economy should (hopefully) improve and jobs will be less hard to come by…and she will have better means to make ends meet… i.e. put gas in the car, make those mortgage payments. she won’t have to worry about it because the economy will be getting better…or at least that’s what we’re all hoping for come january.

when i told little van that obama won this morning he said “YES!! I KNEW IT!”
and he hopped out of the car and had a great day at school. i think that while he has no idea what this really means, he senses that something big is happening, and he’s right.

I read a post today that blamed the economy crashing on ACORN. I don’t mean, in part, I mean the entire thing.

The liars and haters are starting early.

  36.  Grant Says:

I do wish Obama well, and hopefully he governs from the center. Conservative values, at least economically, do have the benefit that most economist believe they work better – ask Paul Krugman, not a conservative by any means, about the need for free trade. If you look at why this crisis occurred, its a rather tragic confluence of events – Wall street, filled with hubris, wanted to get rich and didn’t account for risk, the federal government wanted to streamline lending to subprime borrowers, everyone was taking donations from Fannie and Freddie (yes, Chris Dodd and Barack Obama), and the people who regulated the system (Greenspan, Credit rating agencies, etc.) put on blinders when it came to appropriate measures to recognize and control risk.

As for the comment above, about Roosevelt saving the country from the Great Depression, maybe you ought to go read a history of the Great Depression. Economists point out that a lot of countries went through contractions in the early 30′s, but only one country did things well enough to have theirs called “Great”

First, Hoover helped start the problem by doing 2 things – raising taxes on the wealthy (63% top marginal rate) and putting up protectionist trade barriers (Smoot-Hawley). Sound familiar today? Roosevelt put measures in to stop the downfall, which helped – and some of them were really needed, like mortgage refinancing, the FDIC, and regulations on the financial sector, but many other measures later prevented the economy from rebounding. He stopped the fall but then mired the economy down.

Unemployment was around 25% at the start of Roosevelt’s administration, fell to around 14% in ’37 but spiked back up to 19% in ’38. Roosevelt himself would not have gotten re-elected in ’40 had the nation not needed to stick with a proven leader at a time of imminent conflict.

And of course, the aftereffects of the New Deal and Great Society are looming: a 50 trillion dollar net present liability for Soc Sec and Medicare might be a bit of a problem with the next president in 2016 realizes there is no money left to spend on anything else.

  37.  marty Says:

I’m overjoyed that Obama won, although I have to admit that I’m not totally without apprehension about some of the programs that might come out. Things like allowing people to count the Social Security ‘tax’, and thus get refunded what they paid into it. Yet, years later they will still be able to get SS payments when they haven’t help fund it*. The whole system is struggling as it is – lessening the amount going in will help NO ONE because everyone will be SOL when SocSec goes broke.

But I agree with you, Van – the amount of money being spent overseas in conflict-related situations could be spent in so many better ways.

    * I know this scenario is simplistic – the timelines involved almost assure that SocSec will be broke long before someone would go who has paid nothing into SocSec would be eligible to collect. It’s just the principle of it.
