The richest man you know

I am exhausted, but I’m not giving up. I am working harder than I ever have in my entire life and I have less to show for it than ever… well, in terms of finances. I haven’t fallen behind on my bills, but I worry. I’m very proud of Abbe finding her independence she is slowly gaining with her dress-making, but I’m worried about holding together this home and allowing her the time to work to get there. My retirement plans… haha, … savings? SAVING? I’m surviving – I save myself everyday.

BUT…

Although I eat my kids’ leftovers 90% of the time for my dinners (two nights ago, I took left-over red beans and rice, added cheese and Viv’s half-eaten dinosaur nuggets – recession casserole anyone?) and 20 cent lunches (viva la Ramen noodles!), my children eat balanced meals every day. Although I have no health insurance, my children do. I read to my kids every night, without fail. I take both of my children to school without fail. I am teaching my son guitar. I am teaching my son how to crank a nasty slap shot from the blue line. I take my daughter to the library every day, and we skip down the sidewalk sometimes.

AND THAT…

is why I will not fail and will overcome this. I will kick this down’s ass.

I am the richest man you know.

You have always been rich in the ways that matter. Always. This is why we are amigos. I get your world view and what you carry in your heart. I also like your dog and the sock monkey hat, because, you know, those are the basis of TRUE friendships.

If there is any justice left in this world, people who work this hard to support their family
shouldn’t be left in the cold without health insurance, or having to budget their food to get by.

You’re a talented man Van – somehow people on both sides of the Atlantic
found out the powers that be landed us on a very slippery road we did not deserve.

I’m glad to notice you get so much satisfaction out of your personal achievements though.
