Book Review…

Mercury Falls – I have come to know a lot of neat folks whilst blogging, one of them is one Rob Kroese, aka Diesel and my friend Rob has written a couple of books. I received a copy of his first venture, Mercury Falls a while ago and finished it during the visit to Disney World. Mercury Falls will garner lots of comparisons to Dogma – there’s angels, end of the world, angels betraying other angels, yada, yada, yada… but it takes a slightly more sardonic, and less anti-Catholic approach that makes for an excellent page turner. Rob did a great job writing a very funny book. Can’t wait to dig into his next creations. This would make a perfect vacation book – go get it!

The Demise of Frankenlog

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Viv is all better and off to school today. Now let’s hope no one else catches whatever turned my little angel into a sprinkler of barf.

If you live in the Medford, New Jersey area, pick up a copy of this week’s edition of The Central Record and you will find a nice article in there featuring Abbe and I! A reporter came to the Carriage Trade Cheese Shoppe and interviewed Abbe and I last week to promote our Beef N’ Beer this Sunday from 1-5pm at The Marlton Tavern. The article is great (aside from a couple of errors – they named Abbe the owner of the shoppe, whoops!) and we really hope this gets some more folks out to help our fight. Speaking of which, if you are interested in attending, $30 for adults, $15 for kiddos (don’t forget, $100 donors get a swipe at my head with the clippers!). If you are unable to attend, please consider a donation to our marathon team, All For Layna. We covered a lot of ground the past week, but have to really push it to meet our goal of $5,150. Please help if you can.

Here’s probably the last video you will ever see of me with long hair playing guitar… it’s a guitar lesson video for Sean, Nirvana’s In Bloom…

Every once in a while you get something odd stuck in your firewood. I have a conch shell stuck in a log in my front yard for example. But while my son stacked up the log carrier on the porch he came across this fella… a couple of bolts in him, so we called him Frankenlog!

the bolts are hot and glowing iridescent…

and they come out like this…

Books we’ve been reading…

Dog Loves Books – kids liked it, but it wasn’t a favorite. I liked the message about following your passion and good things will come.
It’s Christmas, David! – the kids love David, he’s a misbehaving sweet kid dealing with the excitement of the approaching holiday
Children Make Terrible Pets – both kids LOVED this book. beautiful artwork and lots of laughs.
Flora’s Very Windy Day – this was good, beautiful illustrations and a good lesson for love between siblings.
Llama Llama Holiday Drama – Viv enjoyed this one, very sweet.
Olivia Goes to Venice – Olivia is another Viv favorite, she enjoyed this one a lot.
The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark – kids both enjoyed this rhyming story of friendship and overcoming fear of the dark.

drawings from a friend, barfing little girl, an amazing perspective, and a funny person doing something serious

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Vivienne came home with two drawing in her backpack. She and her buddy, Kelly drew these pictures of Yogi – I love that Yogi’s tail is wagging in both pictures (which is extremely accurate). I think Bubs is taking Yogi’s loss the hardest, he broke down pretty hard when he saw these…

Speaking of Viv, she’s home today after barfing a couple times last night. She perked up as soon as Abbe woke up and is busy chattering away on the couch with her, but it’s better to be careful and keep her home. Her class has had a lot of sickness passed around this year, might as well do what I can to stem some of that.

Yesterday, a new friend, who reads me via my comments over at The Bloggess forwarded me a link to Bret Hoefen’s blog. Bret is an amazing man recently diagnosed with Clear Cell Sarcoma, a very rare and difficult to treat form of cancer. Please read his story to see how he is handling this, I promise you will feel like doing some good today by the end.

Speaking of the funniest lady on the interwebs, The Bloggess is putting together a great idea for those that are struggling to buy gifts for their loved ones this holiday season, please help if you can.

Movie Review…
Harry Brown – this was pretty decent. A more modern British Charles Bronson/Dirty Harry type movie. Michael Caine is very good in this revenge flick. Back in college, this would have made a great cinema and draft house type of movie to have a bunch of pitchers of beers and wings and watch hoodlums get shot up.

bathing suit design and a very important race

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I love when Viv plays in the sewing room with Abbe. After a few projects, Abbe lets Viv take the scraps to the dress form and design something. This design was a bathing suit…

Beautiful, I know… but wait ladies, get a load of the back… I’m taking orders now.

You might notice a new box on the top right over there… yes, Abbe and I are running the Disney Marathon this January to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am looking to raise at least $3500 between now and then. My motivation is not to say I completed a marathon. Why the hell would anyone want to run 26 miles? It’s going to feel great to complete this thing for sure, but I look at the battle Abbe’s 10 year old cousin Alayna has taken on. And although, Charlie Haughey has a different form of cancer, I can’t help but think of the little hero around the corner from me too while I train. I am asking everyone to help me raise money. Small amounts do matter, and hopefully crossing the finish line happens well before January 9th, when I will most likely be throwing up as I run through the princess’ castle (we really do run through there!). If you can, please give… also, please share this with anyone and everyone you know, retweet and click the Facebook share button on our donation pages.

wow, this week… you really got your money’s worth

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

First off, I can not believe the Flyers amazing comeback to pull the series against Boston even and force a game 7, but to come from being down 0-3 in the first period and win the game? Amazing. This team made the playoffs on the last game of the season, in an overtime shootout win. Are you kidding me? Next up for the Flyers is the formidable task of le Club de hockey Canadien, the Montreal Canadiens. Series starts Sunday, let’s go Flyers.

What a week this has been… in the past seven days, all of the following really happened…

  • my ex-wife got a really bad migraine on Mother’s Day and had to cut short her time with the kids so she could recover
  • my grandfather passed away on Tuesday morning
  • Abbe had a seizure at work and I spent a good part of that evening in the ER
  • my mortgage was deducted twice out of my checking account (and TD Bank will not be crediting the funds back to my checking account for another 3 business days)

I’m not rattling off these things for sympathy or begs of better karma, I’m just ready to relax and have some fun. And I just so happen to have a perfect opportunity this evening – my 20th High School Reunion. In addition, Abbe and I get to meet Sarah Bloom today, a friend of our friend Denise (the wonderful human being that lets me teach her son guitar and took the amazing pictures of Abbe’s dresses). Sarah is stopping by this afternoon to have her daughter measured for a dress by Abbe. Can’t wait to meet Sarah, she’s an amazing photographer in her own right and based on reading her blog and Denise’s stories, a really cool lady.

And even with this week, the perspective – there are millions of people that would swap their very best days for my worst.
